I know what it’s like to stare at the ceiling while the house goes quiet. The day is over, but your mind doesn’t stop. It replays conversations, rehearses tomorrow, and worries about things you cannot fix from your pillow. If that is you, you are not alone, and you are not doing anything wrong. Restless nights are one of the most human things there is, and God is not disappointed in you for it. If anxiety is what keeps you awake, start with this prayer for anxious hearts.
What I have learned is that prayer changes the atmosphere of a sleepless night. Not a fancy prayer. Just an honest one. A prayer for sleep is about handing the night back to the One who never sleeps. Below are seven bedtime prayers for the nights when rest feels far away. Pray them in your own words, or pray them as written. Either way, He hears. Make prayer your first response, not your last resort.
1. A Simple Prayer for Sleep
Some nights the problem is simple. Your body is tired, but your brain is still running the day on a loop. You do not need a lecture. You need peace. The Bible says God keeps in perfect peace the mind that stays on Him. So this prayer is short on purpose. It is just you, turning your thoughts toward Him, one sentence at a time.
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you; because he trusts in you.” (Isaiah 26:3, WEB)
Father, my mind will not slow down, so I am bringing it to You. You said You keep in perfect peace the mind that stays on You, so here is my mind. I set it on You. I set it on Your goodness, Your nearness, Your care for me. Quiet the noise, Lord. Slow the spinning thoughts. Replace every replay of today with the truth of who You are. I trust You with the things I cannot solve. I rest my thoughts in Your hands. Let peace settle over me like a blanket. In Jesus’ name, amen.
2. A Prayer for Peace in the Dark
Darkness has a way of making everything feel bigger. The worry that was small at noon feels enormous in the small hours. But the dark does not change who God is. He is the same steady Father in the night as He is in the day. This is a prayer for the nights when fear creeps in with the shadows.
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8, WEB)
Lord, the dark feels heavy and my heart feels loud. Remind me that You are here, right here, in this quiet room. Your Word says I can lie down in peace because You make me dwell in safety. So I choose peace. I refuse the fear that tries to visit me in the night. Cover this home with Your presence. Station Your peace at every door and window of my heart. I am safe because You are near. Hold me steady until the morning light returns. In Jesus’ name, amen.
3. A Prayer for Surrendering Tomorrow’s Worries
Tomorrow has a way of barging into the night. The meeting, the bill, the conversation you are dreading, the answer you are still waiting for. But you were never meant to carry tomorrow before it arrives. The Bible tells us to cast our anxiety on Him, because He cares. This prayer is you, setting tomorrow down.
“Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7, WEB)
Father, tomorrow is already crowding into my thoughts, and I am tired of carrying it. So I am doing what Your Word says. I cast my worries on You. I hand You the meeting, the money, the waiting, the unknowns. You care for me, so I do not have to carry what You are already holding. Teach my heart to release what my hands were never meant to grip. Tomorrow is Yours. I will meet it when it comes, but I will not rehearse it now. In Jesus’ name, amen.
4. A Prayer for Physical Rest
Sometimes it is not worry keeping you up. It is your body. Aching, tense, restless, wired. Jesus gave a direct invitation to the weary, and that includes the physically exhausted. Bring your tired body to Him like you would bring it to a doctor who actually heals.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, WEB)
Jesus, You invited the weary to come to You, so here I am. My body is tired in ways sleep has not fixed. I bring You every ache, every tight muscle, every restless limb. Touch me with Your rest. Let Your peace move through me from my head to my feet. Slow my breathing. Soften my shoulders. Teach my body what my spirit already knows, that it is safe to let go. I receive Your rest now, the deep kind that restores. In Your name, amen.
5. A Prayer for Protection Through the Night
There is a reason Psalm 91 is the most searched passage in the Bible. When the world feels unsafe, we want to know Someone bigger is watching over us. He is. This is a bedtime prayer of protection, for you and for the people you love, prayed straight from the promises of Scripture.
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.’” (Psalm 91:1-2, WEB)
Lord, I dwell in Your secret place and I rest in Your shadow. You are my refuge and my fortress, and I trust You. Watch over this home while we sleep. Guard my family, my children, the people I love who are far from me. Let no harm come near us. I declare that we are covered, surrounded, and kept. Fear has no assignment here. Your presence fills every room. We sleep under Your protection, and we will wake in Your care. In Jesus’ name, amen.
6. A Prayer of Gratitude Before Sleep
Gratitude is one of the fastest ways to quiet a noisy heart. When you thank God for what He has done, worry loses its volume. The psalmist said it is good to proclaim God’s faithfulness at night. End your day the way you want your heart to rest: thankful.
“It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, Most High, to proclaim your loving kindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night.” (Psalm 92:1-2, WEB)
Father, before I sleep, I want to thank You. Thank You for carrying me through this day, for the strength I did not know I had, for the small mercies I almost missed. Thank You for food, for shelter, for breath in my lungs. Thank You for the people who love me and for Your hand I saw in the details. Even the hard parts of today, I trust You were in them. My heart is full. I fall asleep grateful, because You have been faithful again. In Jesus’ name, amen.
7. A Prayer for Deep Trust
Underneath every restless night is usually one question: can I really trust God with this? The answer is yes, and it has always been yes. Trust is not a feeling you wait for. It is a decision you make, one night at a time. This last prayer is that decision, spoken out loud.
“When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” (Proverbs 3:24, WEB)
Lord, I choose trust. Not because I understand everything, but because I know You. You have never failed me, and You are not starting now. I trust You with my family, my future, my health, my fears. I trust You with the things I cannot control and the questions I cannot answer. My sleep will be sweet because my God is faithful. I close my eyes in confidence, not in worry. You are holding it all, and You are holding me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Rest Well
You do not need all seven prayers. Start with the one that sounds like your night. A prayer for sleep works best when it is honest, not perfect. God is not grading your words. He is listening for your heart.
If one of these bedtime prayers helped you rest, share it with someone who lies awake too. And when you are ready for more, Restfeed has prayers for anxiety, for grief, for lonely days, and for the mornings when you need strength. You are never praying alone. He is with you in the night, and His mercies are new every morning.
